The Spa town of Buxton is 20 minutes drive away which has plenty of shopping facilities, as well as pubs, restaurants & other things to keep the group occupied
There are plenty of walking opportunities in the area. Less than half a mile away is the famous "Mermaid Pool" famous in local folklore & the only inland mermaid legend in the UK. Although listed in The Telegraph Top 50 places to swim in the UK taking a dip is only for the hardy & local legend is that the pool is bottomless (& indeed it resisted local attempts to drain it which gave rise to it's famous heart shaped appearance).
If you’re looking for a pub, the Mermaid until recently was one, and still retains its bar (obviosuly it's closed to the public * is exclusively yours!) However, if you’re looking to head out there are no less than 6 pubs within 4 miles, including the Red Lion in Thorncliffe which is just over 2 miles away.
Walking
The Peak district is a walker’s paradise. There are plenty of walks directly from the house but for a more extensive list of walks please visit peakwalking.co.uk.
For a light stroll you can visit the famous Mermaid Pool which is just a 10 minute walk up the road. The pool is the scene of the legend after which the Inn is named.
For a longer walk from the Inn (2.5-3 hours) you could try this one.
Finally, The Roaches, which are acclaimed as one of the top 10 walks in the UK, are only 15 minutes drive away.
